China Duty Free Group sought to elevate its duty-free retail presence at Hangzhou Airport by capturing the city's local identity across seven multi-category stores. Altavia provided audit, market research, customer experience mapping, travel retail concept development, and design development to transform the terminal into an interconnected, walk-through store journey.
Context
China Duty Free Group needed to establish a unified multi-category retail environment within Hangzhou Airport in China. The commercial objective was to elevate the duty-free presence by reflecting Hangzhou’s distinct identity and charm across seven individual stores. The spatial challenge required designing these separate locations so that they would flow into one another, turning the terminal layout into a cohesive walk-through retail journey.
Our ambition
We aimed to elevate Hangzhou Duty Free by translating the city’s identity into an integrated airport retail environment. Our goal was to design seven interconnected duty-free stores that serve as a continuous walk-through experience for travelers.
Our approach
A city-inspired spatial journey transforming individual stores into a terminal walk-through.
Altavia executed the project through audit and market research, customer experience mapping, travel retail concept creation, and design development. The store design incorporates local structural motifs into an interconnected layout across seven duty-free spaces:
- Conducted initial audits and market research to define the travel retail concept and store design strategy.
- Structured a continuous walk-through layout modeled on Hangzhou’s paved streets to connect seven separate duty-free stores into a single flowing journey.
- Designed retail fixtures and visual touchpoints that echo the traditional architecture and landmarks of Hangzhou.
Our results
- Seven duty-free stores designed
- Delivered complete design development across seven multi-category duty-free retail spaces at Hangzhou Airport.
- Connected walk-through layout established
- Created a flowing store arrangement that integrates multiple terminal locations into a continuous travel retail path.
- Architectural concept executed
